Undergraduate Degree Programs
BS degree in Biomedical Engineering
The Case Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biomedical Engineering was established
in 1972 and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology.
The undergraduate program has four major components:
| |
Introduction to Biomedical Engineering (EBME 105): This freshman course provides
students with an overview of biomedical engineering research and applications, with substantive
content that does not require advanced knowledge of engineering, mathematics, physical sciences,
or biomedicine.
|
| |
The Engineering Core provides a broad background in mathematics, sciences, and engineering.
All undergraduate students in the Case School of Engineering complete the Engineering Core.
|
| |
The BME Core integrates engineering with biomedical science to solve biomedical problems.
Hands-on experience in BME is developed through the undergraduate laboratory and project courses.
|
| |
The BME Specialty Sequences develop depth in a specific area, including orthopaedic and
polymeric biomaterials, biomechanics, devices & sensors for biomedical instrumentation,
biomedical imaging and computing, and biomedical systems & control. Each of these specialty
sequences develops specific biomedical engineering skills that are most often required for
positions in industry and for admission to medical school and graduate school. |
In addition, undergraduate students may select open electives for more educational breadth
or depth, or to meet entrance requirements of medical school or other professional career choices.
Minor in Biomedical Engineering
A minor in Biomedical Engineering is offered to students who have completed the
Engineering Core requirements. The minor consists of 15 credit hours based on the
two physiology courses ( EMBE 201
and EBME 202) and an approved set of three electives
chosen from among the BME Core courses (
EBME 303,
EMBE 306,
EBME 308,
EBME 309 &
EBME 359,
EBME 310 &
EBME 360,
EBME 311,
EBME 320, and
EBME 324). These courses can be completed
within the context of almost all other undergraduate degree programs at Case.
BS/MS Program
Undergraduate students with a strong academic record midway through their junior year
may apply for admission to the integrated BS/MS program. A BS/MS student develops a
senior research project during the summer after the junior year, and this project is
further expanded to complete a MS thesis during the remainder of the BS/MS program.
A BS/MS student enrolls in graduate courses in the senior year and during an additional
academic year. With continuous progress in coursework and research during three summers
and the academic years, this program with can lead to both the BS and MS degrees within
5 years.
Details about requirements and the application procedure for the BS/MS program are located in the Official Graduate Student Handbook.
