BME researcher receives Silber Award

Raphael Alford

Raphael Alford, a Case Western Reserve University medical student completing his medical thesis with Dr. Marty Pagel in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded the Joseph S. Silber student research fellowship from the Ohio Chapter of the American cancer Society. Raphael graduated from Duke University in 2003, receiving a dual degree in biomedical and electrical engineering. He then received a M.S. degree in medical sciences from Boston University in 2005, with his thesis work focused on interference between wifi networks and hospital medical equipment. Raphael’s research in the Case BME department is centered upon the development of an MRI contrast agent that is “activated” in the presence of cathepsin B - an enzyme up regulated in many cancers.  Raphael will use the award to fund his research, as well as a trip to present the results at a national conference
