"The
Art of Biomedical Engineering"
First Annual Competition
The Department of Biomedical Engineering invites applications
for The Art of Biomedical Engineering First Annual
Competition. Artwork will be selected that best captures
the essence of research for Engineering Better Health that
is associated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering. "Large
Art" will be selected for display in matted frames
on the 3rd floor of Wickenden Building in the hallway
outside the main office. "Small Art" will be
selected for display on the BME web site. The same artwork
may qualify for both categories. "Large Art" and "Small
Art" may also be used in other print and electronic
materials used to promote the Department of Biomedical
Engineering.
Eligibility: The primary 'artist'
of the artwork must be a graduate student, undergraduate
student, research staff, research associate, primary faculty
member, or associated faculty member of the Department
of Biomedical Engineering (aka "BME member").
A BME member may submit up to two applications for the "Large
Art"” category and one or two applications for the "Small
Art" category. The primary artist and the person submitting
the art work may not necessarily be the same BME member.
Application Information: The application
must include a page with the artwork that meets the following
criteria:
The artwork must be an image generated from data acquired during
biomedical engineering research. Drawings, sketches, and other subjective representations
are not acceptable.
Either portrait or landscape orientation is acceptable.
To qualify for the "Large Art" category, the artwork must
appear with acceptable sharpness and resolution (no discernable pixilation) when
expanded to minimum dimensions of 11" x 17" and maximum dimensions
of 16" x 24". Borders will not be considered. The artwork must be captured
in an electronic file on a page that meets or exceeds the dimensions of the artwork.
To qualify for the "Small Art" category, the artwork must
appear with acceptable sharpness and resolution with a width between 2.0" and
2.5" and a height between 1.5" and 3.5". Borders will not be considered.
The artwork must appear at the exact dimensions intended for the final artwork,
on a 8" x 11" page.
Color is strongly recommended. False color images, in which grayscales
are converted to a color scale, is acceptable.
The artwork must NOT contain labels, symbols, arrows, boxes, captions,
scales, etc in the image.
Dark backgrounds are preferred for "Large Art", because
the preferred frame matting will be white with a thin black frame.
The application must also include a second page with the
following information:
Names, email addresses, and phone numbers of the primary artist,
the person submitting the artwork, and the Principal Investigator or Research
Advisor.
A scientific title of the artwork that similar to the title of a
journal publication.
2-4 sentences that describe the relevance of the artwork to Biomedical
Engineering (i.e., an abstract for the art).
Month and year that the artwork was generated.
Intended dimensions (width and height in units of inches) for the
artwork.
Both pages must be submitted as MS Word, PowerPoint, or
PDF files. Both pages can be included in one file or can
be captured in two separate files. If the application consists
of two files, both files must be submitted at the same
time.
Review and Reward: Each application
will be reviewed by a panel composed of primary BME faculty
members and designated associates. No selection criteria
will be announced prior to judging. The reward is the prominent
display of the BME member's artwork, and the satisfaction
of promoting the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
Timeline: Applications must be
submitted by 5:00 pm EST, Monday February 6, 2006. Exceptions
are allowed if arrangements are made prior to 5:00 pm EST
Friday February 3. Send applications to mpagel@case.edu.
Applications will not be accepted by delivery methods other
than e-mail. Prior to the deadline on Monday February 6,
direct all questions to Marty Pagel, mpagel@case.edu.
Persons submitting the application for all selected artwork
will be notified by Monday Feb 13. A synopsis of the competition
will be posted on the BME web site at a later date.
Disclaimer: All applications will
be the property of the Department of Biomedical Engineering
and Case Western Reserve University. The Department of
Biomedical Engineering reserves the right to use the artwork
in any capacity without prior consent of the person submitting
the artwork, the artist, or the Principal Investigator
or Research Advisor. Although the Department of Biomedical
Engineering will attempt to acknowledge the artist and
Principal Investigator or Research Advisor whenever possible,
the Department may not be able to honor an acknowledgement
in all cases.
