Dean Kamen
to Speak at Case

Dean Kamen |
"You have teenagers thinking they're
going to make millions as NBA stars when that's not realistic
for even 1 percent of them. Becoming a scientist or engineer
is." -Dean Kamen
Case Western Reserve University is proud
to host Dean Kamen on October 14, as part of the Allen
H. Ford Distinguished Visiting Professor's Program, and
in conjunction with the founding of the 125th anniversary
of the Case School of Engineering (then the Case School
of Applied Science).
Dean is perhaps best known as the inventor
of the Segway HT, but he is also the innovative mind behind
many revolutionary medical devices, such as the INDEPENDENCE
iBOT and Baxter HomeChoice dialysis machine. In fact, Dean's
first business was a medical device company, AutoSyringe,
Inc. He also invented the first wearable infusion pump
while still a college undergraduate.
As simply an inventor, his devices have
without a doubt influenced the lives of millions of people.
One of Dean's proudest accomplishments, however, is FIRST
(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology),
a non-profit organization he founded in 1989. FIRST is
dedicated to proving to the next generation that there
is plenty of excitement to be had in science, technology,
and engineering, through events such as the FIRST Robotics
Competition for high school students, and FIRST Place,
a science and technology center targeted at children.
Space at the lecture is limited, so interested
students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to register
soon (http://www.case.edu/events/kamen)
to reserve their spots.
