MARK KROLL, SENIOR VP FOR ST. JUDE MEDICAL, INC., WILL PRESENT TWO SEMINARS FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and The Institute for the Integration of Management and Engineering (TIIME) will host Mark Kroll, Ph.D., on Monday Nov. 1. Dr. Kroll will present a seminar titled Invention and Patenting at 11:45am - 1:00pm in Nord Hall room 310B, and he will present a seminar titled History and Future of Defibrillation at 3:00-3:50pm in the Schmitt Lecture Hall (Millis 100). All BME and TIIME students and faculty are invited to attend these two special seminars.

Dr. Kroll is the Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at St. Jude Medical Inc., Cardiac Rhythm Management Division. Prior to joining St. Jude Medical Inc., he served as VP of Tachycardia Business Unit and Angeion Corp., and he was a co-founder of SurVivaLink. He is also a director of Harbinger Medical, Inc. (Cardiac Diagnostics), Guidance Interactive, Inc. (Diabetes Monitoring), Arrowhead Offshore Partners, Inc. (Venture Capital), and OncoStim, Inc. (DC Ablation of Cancer).

Dr. Kroll holds 142 U.S. patents and is honored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a prolific inventor. He was awarded "Fellow" recognition by the American College of Cardiology (FACC), and he is one of a few non-MDs and the only prcticing electrical engineer to be granted this FACC honor. he is the top inventor of implatable medical devices in the world; 99% of ICDs (Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators) sold have at least one licensed Kroll patent.

Dr. Kroll has authored over 75 peer-reviewed papers, invited presentations, book chapters, and abstracts. He co-authored the well-known textbook Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Therapy, published by Kluwer, Boston, MA.
