Ashish Doshi receives the Rita
Schaffer Undergraduate Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society
The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is pleased to recognize Ashish Doshi as a one of the winners of this year's Rita Shaffer Undergraduate Awards. Ashish Doshi, a recent Case B.S. BME graduate specializing in tissue engineering, was proudly nominated by the Department of Biomedical Engineering for his impressive academic achievements, outstanding leadership in the BME Department cementing the student-faculty community, excellence in research, and extensive campus and community services.
During his studies at Case, Mr. Doshi collaborated with Dr. Kathe Derwin at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to evaluate methods for removing cellular material from orthopedic soft tissue granfts and to determine the effects of these methods on tissue mechanical properties. In addition, he served as mentoring program co-chair of the Case Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) during his Junior year, helping to establish the underclassman/upperclassman BME mentoring program. He then coordinated many BMES activities as president of BMES during his Senior year, when he also served as a vital link between students and faculty by participating in the BME Faculty Undergraduate Education Committee meetings. He also performed more than 125 hours of community service as a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Currently, Mr. Doshi is starting his first year of the M.D./Ph.D. program at Duke University, in which he will pursue his Ph.D. in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
The Rita Shafer Undergraduate Awards was established to honor the memory of former BMES Executive Director Rita Shaffer, who passed away in 1998 and left her estate to BMES. the Rita Shaffer Undergraduate Award is conferred annually to one undergraduate student from each of the ABET-accredited biomedical engineering programs for outstanding achievement in one or more of the following areas: leadership in the department or university community; outreach to campus, community, or profession; teaching services; exceptional initiative in research; academic achievement; and contribution to society.
