| Overview: |
The Biomedical Engineering Department, with the sponsorship of NDI Medical and The Medtronic Foundation, announces the Third Annual innovative medical solutions competition. This competition seeks entries for the most innovative solutions to meet healthcare needs and technologies to positively impact human health. The top entry will receive the Ronald Thrope and Michael Hollander Biomedical Innovation Prize. The next two entries will receive cash prizes, as well. Continued development of the winning concepts will be supported by additional financing, design support, and faculty mentorship to advance the design, possibly even to commercial transfer.
The most successful teams will be strongly encouraged and supported to enter local and national competitions. Further, these teams will be encouraged to work with bioscience industrial partners in the region and/or form start-up medical and healthcare companies in Northeast Ohio.
Suggested categories of product design include, but are clearly not limited to:
- Surgery
- Therapeutic applications
- Diagnostic applications
- Targeted drug delivery
- Polymeric biomaterials
- Imaging enhancements
- Rehabilitative and assistive technologies
- Home healthcare
- Low-cost solutions for third-world needs

| Instructions: |
The competition consists of two Phases.
Phase I:
In phase I, the problem is identified, intial plan drafted, requirements generated, and conceptual design completed.
Projects will be selected from the Phase I applications. These projects will receive project support of up to $1000 for each project, based on budgets submitted as part of the Phase I plan. The money will be used to support ongoing development and implementation of the design for the Phase II application.
Download the Phase I Entry Form and fill in completely. In addition to the Phase I entry form, a the application includes a design description document that includes the following information:
- Executive Summary
- Introduction and Background
- Statement of the clinical problem or need
- Summary of Design input requirements
- Description of proposed design concept, including figures and drawings.
- Preliminary market analysis
- Detailed Development Project Plan, at a minimum including
- ° Personnel/Skills required
- ° Development timeline
- ° Budget
-
Submit the entry form and concept document by email to Dustin Tyler. Sketches and figures are strongly encouraged to convey the design concept. All materials must be in Adobe Acrobat format. (Adobe Acrobat can be freely downloaded from the Case Software Center). If you have other materials, such as mock-ups or prototypes, that cannot be submitted via email or in Acrobat format, please contact Dustin Tyler as soon as possible.
Phase II:
Only projects selected from the Phase I entries will be elegible for Phase II of the competition. In Phase II, the design will be refined and developed to produce a working and tested prototype version of the device. Each team will be expected to generate design documentation. The Phase II entry will consist of a 25-page maximum description of the design and its testing. Also, each team will present a demonstration of the prototype.
