BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

EBME 440. Translational Research for BME

Course Description:
This course provides training in topics essential for successful translational research that are not included in traditional engineering courses. In the context of biomedical research and development, translational research (TR) can be defined as the translation of laboratory discoveries or developments into improved medical care, bringing new technology "from the lab bench to the bedside." A diverse team of instructors, including engineers, clinicians and administrators, will provide students with a truly interdisciplinary training experience in the steps involved with this process. Through interaction with clinician-instructors and other members of the TR community, students will become comfortable and competent communicating with non-engineers about biomedical science and technology. This experience will enable and empower students to pursue their own TR projects in their graduate research and future careers.

Prerequisites:
Consent of instructor.

Course Topics:
Presented by experts in their field
• Translational Research in BME context
• Communication at the Engineer-Clinician interface
• Research ethics and human subject protection
• Regulatory/oversight organizations
• Clinical validation study design and biostatistics
• Intellectual property
• Commercialization and technology transfer
• Other related topics (see syllabus for complete schedule)

Course Activities:
• Human subjects research certification
• Physician shadowing
• Grand Rounds seminars and Morbidity and Mortality conferences
• Other relevant translational research seminars
• Final project integrating discussed topics

Evaluation:
Grading will be based primarily on class participation, writing assignments, and oral presentations. Short quizzes to test reading comprehension may be given. Students with translational research projects will be expected to apply assignments to their own research.

Where does EBME 440 fit in the BME graduate curriculum?
