EBME 398. Senior Research Projects

The first meeting of EBME 398 for Fall 2007 will be on September 10, 5pm. Tasks for students for the first 2 weeks of the semester are explained in the course document

Description
Senior project laboratory

Course Goals
The objective of this course is to provide senior biomedical engineering students with the opportunity to participate in a research or design project under the supervision of BME faculty. Each student is responsible for developing and performing their own research project. Students are encouraged to work with others in the laboratory, but they must make an active and significant contribution to the project. Furthermore, the project is expected to include a significant engineering component, for example design and/or analysis techniques. Students develop technical writing and oral presentation skills through lectures on these topics, by writing a final report on their project, and by presenting their work in a final presentation before the class and BME faculty.

Prerequisites
Senior standing

Class/laboratory Schedule
First two weeks: senior project proposal (see course document) and registration; lectures begin after registration period ends; pre- and post-midterm presentations; final presentation.

Typical Class Size
25-35

Semesters and Years Offered
Offered fall and spring every year, and some summer semesters.

Computer Usage
Most projects require extensive computer-based analyses. All students are required to prepare a computer-based final presentation.

Laboratory Projects
Individual research is the primary focus of the entire course.

Course Objectives
• Explore and understand the state of the art in a given research area in biomedical engineering.
• Plan a research project and execute it under the supervision of a senior researcher to solve a valid problem within the explored area.
• Implement principles and methods of engineering design in a research project setting.
• Write a scientific paper of good clarity in the format of typical journal articles in the area of research.
• Design and deliver an oral presentation on results obtained at the level of a good conference presentation.
• Investigate an open-ended research question thereby showing an appreciation for life-long learning.
