EBME 317. Excitable Cells: Molecular Mechanisms

Course Syllabus

Textbook
Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes. Hille
From Neuron to Brain. Nicholls, Martin, Wallace, Fuchs

Course Topics
1. Overview: Ionic basis of membrane excitability, action potentials are generated by variety of ion channels, ion channels viewed by different methods that are used to study them
2. Ion permeation and selectivity: Basic principles and theories, properties of pores, selectivity of ion channels
3. Channel gating: Channel activation: voltage sensing, channel activation: gating, inactivation of ion channels, macroscopic (whole-cell) current analysis, voltage dependent gating is modulated by hetero-subunits, ionic currents - two-state model, single channel activity and analysis, open channel block
4. Diverse ion channels: Gap junction channels, ligand-gated channels: diversity and structure-function, calcium channels, chloride channels, ion channels are associated with other proteins in signal transduction
5. Several sessions of journal club-style presentations by graduate students. Undergraduate students will participate in discussion.
